ARTIST RESEARCH
MAUREN BRODBECK
Brodbeck was born in geneva in 1974 and she first studied in visual arts(painting and drawing). she graduated in photography and design film from the Art centre college of design .
Brodbeck is currently working as a photographer as has won many awards for her work. she is represented by many galleries and has many exhibitions of her work. |
This is one of Brodbecks photographs. we see she places a 3d yellow semicircle in the middle of her photograph, this object blocks of most of the background which help draw the audience's attention to it. the most dominant colour in this image is yellow, which stands out and creates a happy mood as we naturally associate warm colours with positive moods. the semicircle being 3d also makes the image more interesting as it is not something we usually encounter in photographs
|
this is another one of Brodbecks photos, the image contains a building a the main focus which has been coloured orange, the capacity has been lowered giving it a see through outcome, this makes the building stand out more. additionally the rest of the picture is black and white which makes the picture more interesting overall and also means that attention is not drawn away from the main image.

the focus of this image is the bridge and the surrounding trees. green is the most dominant colour in this image . the photographer has used 360 degree technique, which pulls focus to the centre of the image. the photographers has made sure to fill the frame. the image is taken outside with natural lighting and of nature which creates a happier tone.

Mehdy Castella
this image is taken through a fisheye lens. there isn't an evident focus in the image. the image is taken during day time and the camera is positioned close to the floor in order to give the image a curve. this image is most likely run through photoshop and the use of fake high definition is evident

RULES OF COMPOSITION
FILLING THE FRAME
filling the frame is a technique used to ensure that the subject takes up the majority of the frame, making the point of interest in the picture clear and leaving no large open\empty spaces. This technique allows the photographer to focus on something a specific or a specific part of their subject, it allows them to manipulate what they show the audinece and what they don't show.
FRAMING THE SUBJECT
Framing the subject is a technique used by photographers to draw attention to a subject. The frame could be made by the photographer. The subject is usually located in the centre of the fame. This allows the audinece to automatically focus on the framed subject as all their attention is drwan to it, this also makes the photo more interesting.
VANTAGE POINT
The majority of pictures taken are taken from the same point of between five to six feet above the floor. Vantage point is a technique that allows photographers to experiment with angles and positioning, we are all used to viewing the world from our own eye level so naturally a picture showing a different vantage point will appear more interesting and appeal more to the audience
DEPTH OF FIELD
Depth of field is a range showing how far or near an object is. it is used by photographers to stop photos from looking flat. in order to show a depth of field you need 3 things, foreground, mid ground and a background.
a narrow depth of field is achieved using a large aperture and a low F-stop for example f2.8, this is when only a particular object in the picture is in focus and the rest is not.
a large depth of field is when everything in the picture is in focus. it is achieved at a small aperture and a large f-stop, e,g f32

RULE OF THIRDS
Rule of thirds is used to off centre the subject. this could be done using a grid.most people say that a picture with the subject directly in the centre is just not as interesting. the grid breaks down the picture into 3 rows and columns.
IDEAS
PHOTOSHOOT ONE
LOCATION: Westminster
OBJECTIVE: To practice shooting with a fisheye lens and practice long exposure
OBJECTIVE: To practice shooting with a fisheye lens and practice long exposure
Long exposure
this is my favourite long exposure image. this is an image of parliament taken from westminster bridge. i held the shutter open for about 30 seconds, allowing the long exposure of the cars driving past and the parliament building. it also lightened the sky giving it the appearance of dark grey and blue. all these make the image interesting

USING PHOTOTSHOP
open the image in Photoshop, duplicate the layer and change the layer style to overlay.
|
you then go to image, adjust and de-saturate the image
|
after the image is de-saturated, invert the image by pressing 'command and I'
|
after inverting the image, go to filter, blur and click on Gaussian blur
|
drag the blur down or up to preferred outcome
|
duplicate the background layer and drag it above the inverted layer. change the layer style to liner light and drag the opacity down to approximately 8
|
adjust the saturation by going to image, adjust and clicking on hue staturation
|
drag the saturation and lightness to the preferred outcome depending on how light or dark you want the image to be.
|
duplicate the background layer again and drag the duplicated layer to the bottom.
|
deselect all other layers, leaving only the duplicated background layer visible. go to image, adjustments and click on black and white
|
select which colours you would like to be more visible and which you would like to make dull
|
make the rest of the layers visible and using the eraser tool, erase which areas you would like to make black and white

PHOTOSHOP OUTCOMES
AO4
Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements
FINAL PIECES
i chose these images as the final pieces because i think they work well together to form a series, they also each exhibit my theme and idea of 'colour & fish-eye'
